A conservation easement for the Terrell Creek Heron Colony property was conveyed to Whatcom Land Trust by Whatcom County, in order to increase protected habitat for the large colony of Great Blue Herons that resides in the area. This long, narrow strip of land is surrounded by two other tracts protected by conservation easements: the 77-acre ARCO Birch Bay heronry to the north, and the 101-acre ARCO Terrell Creek easement to the south and west. Like the adjoining properties, this recent addition to protected lands provides habitat not only for the herons, but also for bald eagles, hawks, kingfishers, and a variety of small mammals and amphibians. Small wetland areas occur throughout the site, and the forest consists of relatively young mixed growth of fir, cedar, hemlock, alder, maple, dogwood and cottonwood.
