A favorite spot for generations of Whatcom County residents and Western Washington University students, Teddy Bear Cove would have been mourned forever if it had fallen to residential development. Whatcom Land Trust was able to assist property owners John Cox, and David and Judy Ireland to find a way to preserve the land for public use, while allowing them to realize a profit from its sale.
With loans from private citizens, Whatcom Land Trust was able to purchase the property, and subsequently sell it to Whatcom County for inclusion in the county parks system.
Located just south of Bellingham city limits, on Chuckanut Drive, the property consists of a forested hillside with a steep trail down to a beach with 1430 feet of waterfront.
Once the site of a brick factory, it has been for many years a favorite spot for sunbathing and picnicking. Accessible from the Interurban Trail, it has been called “A jewel in the crown of Whatcom County’s public lands.”
